We were recently contacted by national radio talk show host Dr. Michael Brown through his assistant.

The message that was relayed is that Dr. Brown thinks The Sunrise's music is great!

If you don't know about Dr. Michael L. Brown, he is the founder and president of FIRE School of Ministry in Concord, North Carolina, director of the Coalition of Conscience, and host of the daily, nationally, syndicated talk radio show, The Line of Fire.

He became a believer in Jesus in 1971 as a sixteen year-old, heroin-shooting, LSD-using Jewish rock drummer. Since then, he has preached throughout America and around the world, bringing a message of repentance, revival, reformation, and cultural revolution. See more at: http://askdrbrown.org

Dr. Michael Brown had his assistant contact The Sunrise out-of-the-blue to give us this wonderful encouragement. We are incredibly humbled by this compliment from such a devout man of God!

We are VERY excited to announce that our new album, We Have Not Heard, has been reviewed in the current November / December 2012 issue of Christian Musician Magazine.

Here are some highlights of the We Have Not Heard review:

"The music here is definitely California cool and influenced by CSN, The Eagles and Jesus Movement bands like Love Song, The Way and Mustard Seed Faith. The Lyrical content is plain spoken and direct, but really refreshing in its candor."

"it would be a shame to miss out on the lovely melodies and genuine emotion offered"

"As the summer CD release schedule starts to sizzle, we at gmcTV decided this was the perfect time to amass a brand-new round-up of the titles we’re truly excited about."

"There’s plenty of uplifting choices this season, from P.O.D.’s comeback CD to a pair of remastered Petra projects and a new studio disc from its long time leader John Schlitt, plus introductions to hip-hop up and comer KB, southern rockers Rhett Walker Band and Jesus Music revivalists The Sunrise."

The Act: The Sunrise
The Album: We Have Not Heard
The Sound: Jesus Music/Psychedlic
The Scoop: In keeping with the Jesus Music tradition of Keith Green, 2nd Chapter of Acts and Love Song, crossed with the mainstream likes of Todd Rundgren and Wilco, The Sunrise is certainly in a class of its own. Adding authenticity to the duo’s sound are era luminaries like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young drummer Joe Vitale and Phil Keaggy.

The Sunrise - Spread the Word (independent)
The Sunrise in Christianity Today

Style: '70s-style Jesus rock; compare to Phil Keaggy, Paul Clark, John Fischer

Top tracks: "Old & Faded," "The Way to Live," "I Love My Wife"

You sure wouldn't pick up this record for its cover art. Ugh. But if you like Jesus music of the 1970s—Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill, Phil Keaggy, John Fischer, Paul Clark—you'll like this debut project from Cleveland couple James and Rebecca Mileti. Aside from the cover art and a few vocal pitch issues, it's a fine album with pointed lyrics addressing romantic love, social justice, pride, emotional abuse, spiritual transformation, and even an altar call: "You don't need to be scared of him, or think you're not good enough / Whores, lepers, and tax collectors made the cut / So you'll be alright / What will you do? / He desperately wants to be with you."

The Sunrise – Spread The Word (CD)

Review on Indie Music Digest by Cyrus Rhodes on February 8th, 2011: Indie Music Digest

As the CD (Spread The Word) slowly unfolds, I can hear many different musical textures reminiscent of such classic contemporary Christian acts that were popular in  the late 70s & 80’s like Honeytree, The Resurrection Band, & The Sweet Comfort Band. It definitely has a positive message via the music which is an impressive blend of earthy progressive rock & alternative rock. (James) Mileti’s voice goes down smooth & is full of passion, hope & bold straightforwardness. The musicianship from all the session players involved is world class. Also present besides the 4 piece standard you will notice impressive Hammond Organ chops, lush vocal harmonies, & well placed percussion & keyboard accents along the way.

The songs themselves are extremely dynamic, & progressive in nature. The songwriting is extremely creative & highly original. Each song possessing a unique personality, flair & signature groove. Many of the songs are a personal testament of sorts that provide much in the way of thought provoking wisdom, hope & the endless possibilities as a byproduct of being repent full. I especially like how the whole CD just flows across the ears song for song & note for note - each piece interconnected with the next. From my personal favorite “Seashell World” to slamming “Don’t Tell me your Spiritual” & “I Have Freedom” to heartfelt “I Love my Wife” & “There is a Faith” to dynamic “Random Acts” this CD has something for just about everyone. The CD ends with “Spread the Word” the perfect finale statement for a CD of this caliber.

Overall Spread the Word by The Sunrise is a very genuine & pure catalogue of music. Fans of contemporary Christian music with a late 70s' psychedelic flair will no doubt love this one. Its strong suit – the amazing amount of originality, creativity & musical diversity this couple has to offer. Like the aforementioned I especially enjoyed the song for song musical flow of the production as a whole. All in all The Sunrise stands out from other contemporary Christian bands in my mind with their unique signature sound, slamming grooves & unique approach in delivering a message that doesn’t come across as feeling under duress or artificial. This is what makes them so effective in delivering their message to the world.

ROCKWiRED RADiO PROFiLES PRESENTS: A HALF HOUR OF POWER WiTH THE SUNRISE AND THEiR JOYOUS DEBUT 'SPREAD THE WORD' by Brian Lush on January 26th, 2011:The Sunrise on Rockwired.com

You can expect to hear just about every kind of music here at ROCKWIRED with the excepetion of Classical. Today, we are pleased to give you some of that old time religion thanks to the duo THE SUNRISE and their acoustic guitar driven debut CD SPREAD THE WORD. Comprised of husband and wife team REBECCA and JAMES - THE SUNRISE pays homage to a time when Christianity was fun with songs like SPIRIT IN THE SKY and PUT YOUR HAND IN THE HAND. Yes, it was time different from today's fractured political climate but THE SUNRISE aren't concerned with political agendas whether they come from the left or the right. It's all about the big J.C.with these two and with SPREAD THE WORD, THE SUNRISE get their Jesus Freak on with plaintive, earnest numbers that recall CROSBY STILLS NASH AND YOUNG.  If you are one of those people that still has CD's save a place for this one somewhere in between CSNY's 'SO FAR' and  VAN MORRISON's 'NO GURU,NO METHOD, NO TEACHER'.

The Sunrise – Spread The Word (CD)

Review in Skope Magazine by Jimmy Rae on January 19th, 2011:The Sunrise on Skope

Husband and wife duo James and Rebecca Mileti are bringing Jesus to the forefront on their debut release titled Spread The WordThe Sunrise is taking a trip back to the 70s, but don’t be mistaken because these two musicians are not performing to the tune of peace & love hippies.  They are playing & singing for one person only and that is God.

Inspired by the 70s Jesus Music Movement, The Sunrise were heavily influenced by artists of that time such as: John Fischer, Phil Keaggy, Chuck Girard & Love Song, Honeytree, Sweet Comfort Band, B.J. Thomas, Andrae Crouch and the late Keith Green.  The Miletis are now Spreading The Word on their own record that is full of love & hope.

I was worried when I read the Bio because I was thinking right away that this would be an overbearing religious album.  I couldn’t have been more wrong, so I do apologize especially to The Sunrise.  I found that there music was so uplifting & positive with clear images of life & the Lord, but not overbearing at all.  In actuality, The Sunrise style is musically sound that includes a gospel setting along with elements of rock, folk, pop and contemporary.  All eleven songs on Spread The Word can easily be played at churches, clubs and any indoor/outdoor venues, which makes their music truly universal.  The easy-going, throwback vibe is there for sure, but James and Rebecca are able to bring it all up to speed for today’s society.  Hanging onto the classic touch of the 70s while embracing the present & future is what this duo is all about.

I picked up on some impressive singing and songwriting from James Mileti to go along with phenomenal acoustic guitar playing.  I could hear definite elements of folk rock coming from The Sunrise, which I feel is their knack.  Additionally, I hear singing from James that fits in perfectly with the overall Sunrise approach.  Besides nice harmonies and melodies, you will also experience wonderful sentiments, powerful words and a sublime atmosphere that will inspire you.

One such powerful message that stood out to me would be on track six “I Have Freedom” where The Sunrise sang: “I have freedom, I have peace of mind cause I got God on my side.”  Nothing wrong with having God on your side and it’s refreshing to hear once in awhile.  In a world full of corruption & despair, The Sunrise gives light to a new hope & happiness that will hopefully spread to all. These free spirits have made music that is contagious and you will ALL see The Sunrise coming up over the horizon very soon.

The Sunrise – Spread The Word (CD)

“I Love My Wife” continues this same type of momentum, with a laid-back approach taken to the guitars, drums, and vocals. The song shines brightest on the instrumental side of things, with the band taking an about-face in the transition from stanzas to the chorus. A hallmark of any good band, this spontaneity keeps listeners focused in through the rest of the album. This is a great thing, as the penultimate track “There Is A Faith” is a late-disc gem.

“There Is A Faith” features a stripped-back The Sunrise, with the band playing softly to properly highlight the uplifting message present. The Sunrise should be seen as a revolutionary, contemporary Christian act. This is because there has been a lot of complacency and preaching to the choir with a great many CCM acts in the last decade. While this is a good way to ensure that Christians do not err in their ways, praise music should be made to glorify God and show exactly what listeners may be missing in their life. The Sunrise are able to have a strong, Christ-centered message but are able to wrap it in a very technical and catchy form. They are able to show the beauty present in Christianity while making some great music – buy a copy of “Spread the Word” if you’d like to see what I mean.

The Sunrise - Spread The Word (CD)

Goldmine Magazine, Oct 8th, 2010 issue (Issue 788) contains the following review of The Sunrise CD, "Spread The Word:"Goldmine Magazine Issue #788

"You don't have to be a Christian to listen to the newest release from the Cleveland-based band The Sunrise.  That being said, the lyrics do spread the Gospel in a heavy-handed fashion.  And the album art can be seen as a bit creepy ("Jesus Freak" is not a pejorative label for any of the musicians here).  However, the lyrics are easy to disregard if the listener is a non-Christian, or even a card-carrying atheist, as the music will shine in spots for secular ears."

"The best song on the album is not the band's favorite (and opener), "Old & Faded," but the more pleasant "Random Acts."  And songs like "The Way To Live," "Seashell World," and "I Love My Wife" appear to be heavily influenced by the '70s songwriting of Paul McCartney, Seals & Crofts, Don McLean and Todd Rundgren.  However, the band claims to be mostly inspired by more obscure artists within the Jesus Movement, a major Christian element within the hippie counterculture back in the '60s and '70s.  For anyone who loves the music of '70s radio pop, this can be a true find."

- Stephen Devillion, Goldmine Magazine.

The Sunrise played the Kamm's Corners Farmers Market in Ohio on October 3rd, 2010 and played for former Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich and the Governor of Ohio, Ted Strickland. It was a great opportunity to be able to spread the Good News to people! I hope they were listening to the words! They both even spoke to the crowd with our mics and gear!  We hope to find a picture with the pair speaking with a Sunrise sticker on the mic stand! Too cool. "Spread The Word" indeed!

JESUS SAVES!

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

"For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."

"He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

- John 3:16-18.
